Crafting a digital experience that captures the character and spirit of The Cross Keys

Challenge

The Cross Keys in Harpenden is a historic local pub with deep roots in the town’s heritage and its online presence offered an opportunity to better showcase this character.

The client required a user-friendly website that could both showcase the pub’s offerings and communicate its rich historical narrative. The challenge lay in creating a platform that felt warm, traditional and authentic, while remaining straightforward for the client to update and maintain with ease.

The Cross Keys is a Grade II-listed public house situated on Harpenden’s historic high street, with origins dating back to the 18th century, when it was first known as The White Hart. As one of the town’s longest-standing establishments, it embodies centuries of local stories, architectural character and social tradition. Far more than a destination for drinks, it stands as an enduring landmark in Harpenden’s cultural landscape, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the town’s evolving identity.

solution

To help share this significance with a wider audience, Oyster Studios developed a website designed to bring the pub’s story to life in an engaging, accessible and visually rich way.

The site showcases the Cross Key’s historic narrative, its distinctive architectural features and its longstanding role as a hub for local gatherings. It also shines a spotlight on the pub’s carefully curated selection of local ales and gins, celebrating the region’s vibrant brewing and distilling heritage and reinforcing the venue’s commitment to championing local producers.

The site’s visual design expertly balances tradition and clarity, using a muted, heritage-inspired colour palette and elegant typography that evoke the pub’s historic character. High-quality images, including intimate shots of the pewter bar-top, flagstone floors, tankards and the secluded garden reinforce its authenticity and warm, welcoming atmosphere. The navigation is simple and logical, with a compact menu structure that guides users to key content. These visuals are complemented by clean page layouts, making it easy for visitors to quickly find and appreciate different aspects of the Cross Keys story.

The style is beautifully traditional, with a fresh colour palette and complimentary type style. All the key information about the pub and what our visitors can expect are carried through on our new heritage section and picture gallery. Great job!
